It’s Summertime! Check you’re doing everything you need to to take care of your home with this handy checklist
It’s that time of year again! Summer has finally started to bless us with her presence and give us something to be thankful for this year (aside from being thankful that we don’t live in America). Summer is here, which means the smell of freshly cut grass, the whirr of power tools and the afternoon beers after a home project has been crossed off the list. Summer is the season of construction and home renovation. We have compiled a list below to help you map out your Summer projects!
-Check your deck for rot and weak points! Now is the time to patch up those soggy areas caused by the dampness of Winter. OR pull up the whole thing and expand to create the perfect space for an evening BBQs with mates.
-Paint the house! Although Kwi Summers definitely aren’t rain-free now is your best shot at getting one of the most onerous tasks of home renovations done. Check the forecast, select your colour chip and GO.
-Have your air-conditioner unit serviced. As we have previously discussed, having your air-conditioner unit regularly serviced by a professional is SO essential to maintain a healthy supply of quality indoor air for you and your family. If your unit is being regularly serviced, amazing. If not, get that bad boy checked now and ensure a routine is put in place going forward.
-Check windows for leaks. It’s likely that if you have a leaking window or point in your house you would have discovered this over the wet months. Now is the time to get them repaired, leaving leaks longer can spread mould and rot throughout your house. Causing your further issues, health concerns and money. So get these fixed ASAP!
-Water-blast your decking and exteriors. In New Zealand for many of us, Summer means endless BBQs outside and a large gathering (or 17) around the Christmas period. Be sure your place is looking well-maintained, fresh, clean and, cared for when your not-so-subtle in-laws come around this year. Water-blasting can also help identify any areas that may need to be patched up or repaired. But let’s not forget to be water-conscious Kiwis, please be aware of local water restrictions and considerations within your area.
-Clean out gutters and downspouts. Get rid of all those leaves and gunk clogging up your guttering. Additionally, there are some trees that sprout beautiful flowers at this time of year and then drop them at the end of the season. Be conscious if you have one of these on your property that you may need to complete this task at both the beginning and end of the season.
Our top tips and final thoughts:
- Avoid large expensive projects through regular home maintenance.
- Get the whole family involved. A big project doesn’t have to be a BIG project if everyone pitches in.
- Want to take it to the next level? Here are a few ideas to create a more eco-friendly outdoor space.
- And lastly- FILL your gas bottle, and maybe have an extra one to spare.
